J’avais dix ans.

On était le 6 décembre 1989. Il y a à peine quelques heures, un homme avait tiré sur des femmes à l’École Polytechnique à Montréal.

«J’haïs les féministes!» avait-il crié.

Je me souviens de Maman. Ses larmes de rage dans la pénombre de l’hiver. Et papa, avec qui j’allais écouter les nouvelles ce soir-là, figé par le récit de Pierre Leclair, un policier qui allait apprendre que sa fille, Maryse, était parmi celles qui venaient de perdre la vie.

Et depuis, je récite leurs noms.

En 2022, j’ai canalisé ma colère en un mémoire franco-féministe pour ONFR+ du 6 décembre 1989, mêlant mon récit à celui de Gaëtane Pharand, ancienne directrice générale du Centre Victoria pour femmes de Sudbury, ainsi que Julie S. Lalonde, militante et éducatrice féministe.

«C’était l’horreur», m’expliquait Gaëtane Pharand, qui est aujourd’hui à la retraite. «Mais je ne me rappelle pas ce jour-là. Il y a un instinct en moi qui fait que je dois me protéger».

Mais pour Julie S. Lalonde, ce jour reste gravé dans sa mémoire.

«En 1989, je commençais la maternelle – j’avais super hâte parce que j’étais très jalouse de mon frère, plus âgé que moi, qui allait déjà à l’école », m’a-t-elle souligné. «En même temps, ces femmes allaient être tuées parce qu’elles cherchaient une éducation. Je pense souvent à ça».

Il faut toujours porter les 14 femmes assassinées en 1989 dans nos cœurs, selon Gaëtane Pharand et Julie S. Lalonde. Mais, ajoutent-elles, le 6 décembre est aussi l’occasion de vouer nos pensées à toutes ces autres femmes qui ne sont plus parmi nous.

Comme les victimes de féminicides tués cette année en Ontario, une province qui s’entête à nier l’épidémie de violence entre partenaires intimes – et ce, même si près d’une centaine de municipalités partout en province ont déjà déclaré l’épidémie.

«Don’t want to rush», dit le gouvernement ontarien. No rush. Chill. Peu importe que cette déclaration politique soit la première de 86 recommandations de l’enquête publique qui a enquêté après les meurtres d’Anastasia Kuzyk, Nathalie Warmerdam et Carol Culleton en une seule et sombre journée à Renfrew en 2015.

Scream for change, avait plaidé le jury. Hurlons au changement, écrivais-je encore récemment pour ONFR+. Nous sommes en état d’urgence — c’est une épidémie. Le gouvernement de l’Ontario doit agir.

Car nous pleurons toujours nos larmes de rage dans la pénombre de l’hiver. Et elles sont toujours mon incantation:

I was ten years old.

It was December 6, 1989. Just a few hours earlier, a man had shot at women at the École Polytechnique of Montréal.

“I hate feminists!” he shouted.

I remember Maman. Her tears of rage in the winter darkness. And Papa, with whom I listened to the news that night, transfixed by the story of Pierre Leclair, a policeman who had learned that his daughter, Maryse, was among those who had just lost their lives.

And I've been reciting their names ever since.

In 2022, I channeled my anger into a Franco-feminist memoir for ONFR+ on December 6, 1989, blending my story with that of Gaëtane Pharand, former Executive Director of Sudbury's Victoria Centre for Women, and Julie S. Lalonde, feminist activist and educator.

“It was horrifying,” explained Gaëtane Pharand, who is now retired. “But I don't remember that day. There's an instinct inside me to protect myself.

But for Julie S. Lalonde, that day remains engraved in her memory.

“In 1989, I was starting kindergarten - I was super excited because I was so jealous of my brother, older than me, who was already going to school,” she pointed out to me. “At the same time, these women were going to be killed because they were looking for an education. I often think about that.”

We must always carry the 14 women murdered in 1989 in our hearts, according to Gaëtane Pharand and Julie S. Lalonde. But, they add, December 6 is also an opportunity to dedicate our thoughts to all those other women who are no longer with us.

Like the victims of feminicide killed this year in Ontario, a province that stubbornly denies the epidemic of intimate partner violence – even though nearly a hundred municipalities across the province have already declared the epidemic.

“Don't want to rush,” says the Ontario government. No rush. Chill. Never mind that this political statement was the first of 86 recommendations from the public inquiry that investigated after the murders of Anastasia Kuzyk, Nathalie Warmerdam and Carol Culleton in a single dark day in Renfrew in 2015.

Scream for change, the jury pleaded. “Hurlons au changement,” I wrote recently for ONFR+. We're in a state of emergency - this is an epidemic. The Ontario government must act.

Because we still weep our tears of rage in darkness of winter. And they are still my incantation:
